The elementary years are a time of amazing growth and discovery, both academically and spiritually. STSJP students are guided through these years by caring teachers and staff.
Academically, these years are crucial. Reading, writing and math skills learned will be used throughout the child's life. STSJP utilizes curriculum and teaching methods to reach students with varied learning styles. Students explore their world through the study of science and social studies, and are enriched through art, music, computers, gym and library with licensed teachers.
Spiritually, children grow in their relationships with Christ. Sacramental preparation and participation are a key component of our school. Students are actively involved in the celebration of Mass. Prayer throughout the day reminds students of God's presence in their lives.
Socially, students grow as individuals and learn to recognize others as individuals. Students learn to make decisions in the context of their faith, guided by the teachings of Christ. At STSJP, students may begin participating in school athletics in fourth grade, providing another venue for personal growth.
"In first grade, we really learn to read and comprehend our stories, write about all kinds of topics on our own, and become mathematicians. Our groups have Thursday STEM activities, field trips far and near, and themed weeks throughout the year. The growth of students in first grade is simply amazing!"
- Samantha Harden, First Grade Teacher
"Students can look forward to a challenging curriculum that will engage them with fun activities. In my opinion, our small class sizes set STSJP apart from other schools."
- Mrs. Davis, First Grade Teacher
"We spend a great deal of time preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. We learn about the importance of the sacraments along with the correct procedures. Besides that we focus on reading and math...
The students tend to be close to each other even when they leave STSJP. I think this is due in part to the smaller class size but also because the students go through a lot of successes and hardships together turning to God in both times of joy and sadness."
- Mrs. Burns, Second Grade Teacher
"3rd grade is awesome at STSJP! 3rd graders can look forward to many hands on learning experiences as well as practicing their faith in a very practical way. We traditionally have the 3rd grade Invention Convention in which students can showcase their knowledge of scientific principles as well as their entrepreneurial skills.
This year we have incorporated monthly outdoor learning days, taking the classroom outside to a local park to apply our math, science, and writing skills in a real world setting. To incorporate our Catholic faith in the virtue of charity, 3rd graders complete service projects on a regular basis. Last year, 3rd and 4th graders filled 24 backpacks with hygiene and food essentials, prayer cards and rosaries and donated them to the Kokomo Rescue Mission to be handed out as needed to those experiencing homelessness."
- Mrs. Gilbody, Third Grade Teacher
